How to record guitar at home without an amp (or annoying anyone)

8 min read · updated Oct 2026 · by the SOWND team

TL;DR — the answer

Plug your guitar into any audio interface (or a USB mic), open SOWND, hit record. No amp, no DAW install, no neighbors.

What you actually need

A guitar, something to plug it into, and headphones. That's the whole list — an entry-level interface costs less than a pedal and doubles as your soundcard. No interface at all? A USB mic pointed at your amp or acoustic works too; SOWND takes whatever input the browser gives it.

Recording into your browser

Open SOWND, allow microphone access, pick Bare Wire. The signal meter moves when you play a note — no drivers, no buffer settings, no DAW. The Record tab is a full multi-track studio: arm a track, stack takes, keep everything in the tab.

Getting a good take

  • Set your level

Play your loudest part while watching the input meter — peak amber, never red. Digital clipping is forever; quiet is fixable.

  • Track the take, not the mix

Play the song start to finish before you touch any knob. Momentum beats settings.

  • Delete mercilessly

Three honest takes beat thirty "good enough" ones. Keep the one where the groove felt easy.

Exporting for demo/social

Bounce the mix to WAV straight from the Record tab — per-track stems or a mixed master. For social clips, 30–45 seconds of the hook outperforms a full song every time. Want the tone first? Audition every tone before you buy — each demo on the site is a real engine render.
